wHAT TO DO AFTER YOU ARRIVE

Pick up at the airport & MOVE IN NEW APARTMENT

You will meet your employer in person finally and move into your new apartment provided by your employer.

Medical Checkup

All teachers are required to get a medical check at a designated Korean medical clinic. The teachers' official medical date must be provided to the Immigration office, as part of the application for residence registration.

ARC Card

An ARC (Alien Registration Card) is a Korean national identification card. Foreigners who will be staying in Korea for more than 90 days are required to apply for ARC Card. An employer will give you the proper documents to submit to the immigration office and they will send it to you in a couple of weeks.

Open your bank account

Once you get an ARC Card, then you can open your bank account in Korea so that you can get your monthly salary transferred to your account. This will also help you to get your phone service. (In Korea, having a phone number is very helpful for many kinds of business.)

Report to Office of education

Your employer will report your employment to regional Office of Education. You will be required to submit some documents relevant to you. TOP ESL will inform your employer and you of the list of necessary documents.

Orientation & In-house training

You will get necessary in-house training and orientation. Your employer will help you to settle down here smoothly.

Frequently asked questions

Foreigners must register themselves within 90 days from their arrival date. You need to apply for an ARC Card at the local immigration office. In addition, you must return it to the immigration officer at the departure airport when you leave Korea. For more information, you can contact Immigration Call Center at 1345 in Korea. 

All teachers are required to complete the medical exam within their first 90 days. But most schools and private institutes will ask you to complete this requirement within the first or second week as this determines your legal residency in Korea. 

Blood Test

  • Hemoglobin
  • SGOT/SGPT (Liver Function Test), FBS (Fasting Blood Sugar)
  • VDRL-qal. (Venereal Disease Research Laboratory) for syphilis.
  • Drug screening tests (cocaine, opiates, cannabinoid, methoxyphenamine)
  • HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)

Physical Examination

The examiner will check your height, weight, and blood pressure, They also check your vision (including color blindness), and hearing, and ask about health habits. For the test:

  • You must not eat 12 hrs before the test
  • You must bring your ARC card or Passport
  • You must bring 2 ID photos (3cm x 4 cm)

Estimated Time and Cost

It takes about 1 hour and the cost varies depending on the hospital (usually 70-100,000 KRW)

Result

You will get the results in about 7 days. 

Note

The Korean government takes zero risk when it comes to the safety of their students. This includes both physical diseases and severe neurological conditions which may be deemed a potential health threat and are automatically screened by Korean Immigration officials. 

Yes, the test is at teacher’s expense. The employer usually doesn’t cover this cost.
